Portrait of Joe Amandola III while playing NHL ’12. I was playing around with a new lighting technique and thought I would share. I used a Gary Fong diffuser with some foil inside. Revolutionary, I know.

Seeing Red

In this photograph I adjusted the colors using a gradient map and selecting two desired colors for my highlights and shadows. From there I switched my layer style to Difference and came out with this stunning coloring. The great thing about this photograph is that once I switched to Difference the general rules for shadows and highlights went out the window. Cyan and red no longer obey the highlight/shadow assignment that I originally designated, instead shadows take on the most vibrant parts of the image not the darkest, and the highlights become deeper and saturated.

Color of Mood

An experiment in toning is what we have here. Here a series of curve layers and a black and white layer make the color shifts. Some desaturation and contrast adjustments, and that’s it really. Sometimes a photograph enters photoshop without real purpose, those photos become puzzles through which I use toning to unlock. This felt like a puzzle.
